A little background on 316L Stainless Steel Most stainless steel jewelry is made of 316L stainless steel, also called surgical steel. 316L stainless steel is a very durable and resilient material that is well suited to the manufacture of jewelry. Due to its hypoallergenic properties, it has been used in surgery for a long time, as it does not cause allergies. Stainless steel is also particularly suitable for ear jewelry and piercings. Stainless steel is also waterproof, i.e. it does not lose its color or tarnish even after regular contact with water. Jewelry made of stainless steel can therefore be worn in the shower without hesitation.

Hypoallergenic Jewelry is made from materials less likely to cause an adverse skin reaction. If you periodically experience an allergic reaction to jewelry, it is likely either the Nickel or Copper contained in that metal. Avoiding jewelry that contains these metals can be quite difficult. Surgical stainless Steel contains 12% Nickel, Sterling Silver contains 7.5% Copper and 18k Gold can contain 25% of anything!

Any metal mixed with other metals is called an alloy. Any metal mixed of 2 or more metals is called an alloy. Elements are alloyed to achieve different properties such as strength, malleability, durability, tarnish-resistance and sometimes just for color preferences. Some pure metals, such as gold and silver, are too soft in their pure elemental state. Jewelers add different metals to strengthen the material and improve durability during wear. For instance, pure silver bends and scratches quite easily. A metal alloy called sterling silver is harder and solves this problem. To make sterling silver you'd alloy 92.5% pure silver with 7.5% copper to have a stronger metal.
