WORDS ON THE LIGHTER'S BACK Version=NIV The White Horse I watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals. Then I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder,

"Come and see!" I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest. The Red Horse When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say,

"Come and see!" Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make people kill each other. To him was given a large sword. The Black Horse When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say,

"Come and see!" I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, "Two pounds of wheat for a day's wages, and six pounds of barley for a day's wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!" The Pale Horse When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say,

"Come and see!" I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.

Apocalypse is a series of fifteen woodcuts that feature scenes from the Book of Revelation. These memorable works by published in 1498 were probably cut on pear wood blocks and quickly after release they became popular across Europe. One of these 15 carvings is Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The four riders are symbolizing Conquest or Pestilence, War, Famine, and Death. The apocalyptic vision present in Christianity is that the Four Horsemen bring the divine apocalypse upon the world announcing the Last Judgment. The number of horsemen is important since four is the number affiliated with the creation of the earth in the Book of Revelation. The scene also includes a depiction of a wide-jawed creature swallowing a man for which the Apocalypse seems even more crude and powerful than on the compositions. The image was made as one of a series of fifteen illustrations for a 1498 edition of the Apocalypse, a subject of popular interest at the brink of any new millennium. In 1511, after the world had failed to end, the plates were republished.
