A zinc alloy is a combination of at least two metals, such as zinc and aluminum or zinc and copper with a relatively high melting point, good corrosion resistance, superior strength-to-weight ratio, lower weigh compared to other metals, and easy to work with to create no bake sand castings. Sand Casting is the process of making cast metal parts using sand molds. This metal casting process utilizes two "match plates" that are used to form the sand (mixed with a "binder") into the desired shape. The sand mold halves become the "die" used in the casting process. A molten metal such as a zinc alloy is poured into the sand “die" to form the metal castings. Each part is cleaned of sand, debured, burnished, polished and then plated with first copper then gold or silver (alloy).

Considerations for plated jewelry: All fashion jewelry necklaces, earrings or bracelets are capable of tarnishing (oxidation and corrosion). Why? It's simple, as the metals come in contact with moisture, acids, oils and air they react and tarnish. How quickly jewelry tarnishes depends on a number of factors: moisture in the air, the level of amino acids in your perspiration that contain corrosive sulfur or sulfides, your day to day Ph, medications, hormone balance, cosmetics, body lotions, antiperspirants, and perfumes. As you can see, there are many factors will alter your jewelry's chemical exposure levels and each will accelerate tarnish. To minimize tarnishing, try cleaning your jewelry with dish soap and water after wearing it. This will help remove skin oils or perspiration and may help keep jewelry stay clean and bright longer. Then, store in an airtight container. Some body types do not do well with anything plated. If you are one of these people or wear cologne/perfume, we suggest that you purchase hardened alloys such as 316L Stainless Steel or you can apply a layer of clear semi gloss lacquer spray paint over the jewelry surfaces, front, back and sides. The additional layer will protect the alloys in the 14k gold from moisture and chemicals.
