Back Story:
The Via Dolorosa, the “way of sorrow,” is where Jesus carried the cross on the stone street in the Old City of Jerusalem to his own crucifixion. Nobody knows precisely the exact route Jesus took with the cross. But, the Via Dolorosa is the road that pilgrims have been taking for the last 1,000 years. The 14 Stations of the Cross mark the events documented in the New Testament that took place as Jesus walked from inside the western walls of the Old City of Jerusalem to Calvary. The Sanhedrin (an elite council of priestly and lay elders) had Jesus arrested during the Jewish festival of Passover because they were deeply threatened by his teachings so they dragged him before Pontius Pilate to be tried for blasphemy. He was condemned to death on Calvary where he was crucified and buried. The 14 stations are marked both in Jerusalem and along the walls of many Catholic churches worldwide.
